Fashion as a United Voice

The fashion industry has been evolving and rotating its trends and genres at an alarming rate; the result of social media. By the time you’ve spent a week on TikTok, new trends are already cycled in. What’s interesting to see, is the integration of fashion from cultures around the world, with the Western one. With this integration, a thin line begins to form between appreciation and appropriation. But this isn’t something we’re only just being introduced to.

The ‘Bold Glamour’ TikTok filter: Have we gone too far?

Gone are the days’ filters were used solely for tweaking a photo’s colour balance, shifting the hues from dull to bright, or getting rid of those pesky light glares that forever seek to ruin the quality of an image.

Filters have taken up a new identity in the past decade. We have seen the transition from ‘vivid warm’ on the camera app – for all you iPhone users out there – to ‘M5’ on VSCO. From the ‘dog filter’ on Snapchat – if you know, you know – to a million different ‘sparkle’ filters on In

Coming Out and Coming Together: Part 4

I’ve known that I was gay ever since I understood what the word ‘gay’ meant. I must have been, what – about 13? Or maybe 14? Realising that I liked girls was the easy part. Realising that I didn’t like men, however, was so much harder to accept. Following this, I spent many a night mourning the life I had envisioned for myself, with a husband, a family and maybe even a few pets. Everything I thought I needed, that I thought I had wanted, was no longer possible. For it wouldn’t allow me to live m

Trans Rights Are Human Rights: The Journey of Scotland's Gender Bill

Scotland’s Gender Recognition Reform Bill was proposed with one goal in mind. Improve the lives of transgender people; by making the Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC), more accessible. Holyrood’s aims were simple, they first wanted to lower the age at which one could apply for the certificate from 18 to 16, allowing young trans individuals the right to have their gender legally recognised. They also wanted to attenuate the (medical) evidence demanded of candidates to attain the GRC.

The Christmas Chocolate Debate

Heroes are the superior Christmas chocolate box. Not only is it from Cadbury so its guaranteed to be good chocolate, with the recent addition of the dinky decker and crunchie bits it’s a perfect balance of textures and flavours. For something chewy there’s the éclair, for pure chocolate there’s the dairy milk block, for sugary sweet there’s the twisted crème egg or for crunch there’s the aptly named crunchie bits. There is something for absolutely everyone! When these are brought out in my house

Movie Worlds that I Want to Visit

The Barbie Fairytopia Universe

Timeless, magical and fantastical are some of the words that I would use to describe the Barbie Fairytopia universe. With fairies and mermaids alike, the animated films world is made to be so mystical and enchanting that I truly could not think of any other fictionalplace that I would rather visit. As a child, I was in awe of the Magic Meadow, which is the beautiful location of the film. It is visually stunning and looks like it could have been torn from the pages of a fairy tale book – the flowers are enormous, the sky is a gorgeous pink, and it is surrounded by rolling hills as far as the eye can see.

Novels that Truly Outweigh their Film Adaptations

With many stories being adopted by the film industry and transformed into movies or TV shows, we can find excitement in discovering that our favourite book will soon be on screen. However, the disappointment can be all too real when we realise the producers failed to bring the novel any justice.
